Speciality pharmaceutical companies are market driven and focus on drugs targeted to a specific group, niche, of patients suffering from a particular, often less common, disease.
These products have lower yearly revenues which makes their promotion a lower priority for the large pharmaceutical companies that mostly focus on drugs with higher annual sales that are used by millions of patients and demand large sales forces.
With careful targeting of which doctors to promote the drugs to, relatively small specialty drug sales forces can be dramatically effective, driving significant growth in the number of prescriptions of a particular drug.
Specialty pharma companies have no in-house research and will in-license products or develop new indications or new formulations for current products.
