Specialty Generics

Non-substitutable generics

Specialty Generics is a new business area for EQL Pharma. The segment includes medicines within the therapeutic areas of transplantation, allergy and immunotherapy, and hormone replacement therapy.

Specialty Generics are highly complex generic medicines that require more advanced manufacturing processes and regulatory approvals than traditional generic pharmaceuticals.

Unlike conventional generics, these medicines are not automatically substituted at the pharmacy level. Instead, they require an active prescribing decision by the treating physician. One reason for their non-substitutable status is that many of these products have a narrow therapeutic index, meaning that treatment initiation and any subsequent switches between products must be carefully monitored and managed by healthcare professionals.

Strong Growth Potential

The Specialty Generics segment is expected to grow at a faster rate than many other areas of the pharmaceutical industry. Growth is being driven by several factors, including the expiration of patents for high-value medicines and increasing pressure on healthcare systems to reduce costs.

Another important driver is the rising prevalence of chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), cancer, HIV and autoimmune disorders, where these medicines play a critical role in patient treatment.
